Ideals of Beauty

Keep in mind that the Renaissance period was the time when human anatomy was very closely studied. Thus, we have the famous Vitruvian Man by Leonardo da Vinci providing for the perfect proportions on a man’s body and face, ideals of beauty that still remains up to this day in many ways.

Said ideal of beauty consisted of wide shoulders and thin waist as well as a tall and well-built figure, which must be carried in noble motions. To be considered beautiful in those times meant white teeth framed by red lips, arched eyebrows and deep set eyes, all of which are still true today.

Rich Fabrics

Renaissance period clothes were characterized by rich fabrics like silk, brocade and velvet. Of course, these cloths were almost always limited to the rich and noble because of the sumptuary laws in effect then. The lower classes were confined to the more practical cotton although certain relatively luxurious details were included in the clothes particularly during special occasions.

To make the fabrics even richer, semi-precious stones were part of the design especially around the necklines. Although black was the favorite color in many regions, it served as the perfect backdrop to show off the gemstones embedded in the clothing. Still, it must be emphasized that color was an important aspect of dressing since it made for attractive clothing choices.

Furs were also used as linings on the sleeves such that the entire look was almost ostentatious, which was not surprising as clothes were used to convey social status. Again, the more opulent the look, the richer the person was supposed to be.

Layers upon Layers

One of the things that a modern woman may not like about Renaissance clothing is the seemingly endless layers of clothing that encased the body. The Renaissance period clothed the body to conform to the ideals of beauty as well as to protect it from the elements. Keep in mind that central heating was a thing of the distant future so much so that even the Renaissance castles were drafty most of the year.

If one was to choose an authentic costume as a noble woman during Renaissance fairs, you will have to deal with at least five layers of clothing. These layers included the underskirt, collar, vest, bodice and skirt. If the costume involved that of a Spanish noble, farthingales made of whalebone and rope further complicated the process of dressing up so much so that it will take hours and around two assistants to finish the job. Still, for the sake of magnificent beauty, it was all worth it.

When it comes to Renaissance clothes, the more magnificent it is in today’s standards, the better for authenticity. If only for a day, being Renaissance men and women is fun, fabulous and simply fantastic.
